Shelter 1.0 - Voodoo Village

Scenographic design / Show direction / Content production / Show control

2022, Voodoo Village, Belgium

Over the years, I have been increasingly focussing on using video/LED screens as a moving light source, instead of a medium to display a full standard video. I find it extremely interesting to keep a location and environment in mind during the design process—either having the video blend in naturally or stand out as an iconic statement in the space. I love weird, unusual LED screen set-ups!

The area I was asked to make a design for had a skyroof—a giant structure made of steel and a black foil roof fabric. Usually, when designing for an open-air festival, you are limited to the space on stage, but this set-up offered new possibilities. I wanted to incorporate the entire area and provide a 360-degree experience. After many in-house variations and sketches, I came up with the idea for three extremely long LED structures all hanging at particular angles, causing the center structure to continue behind the stage—making the structure appear infinite.
