Rave Rebels is Belgium’s biggest indoor techno event, this edition pulling 30,000 visitors over the course of two days.

Creative process
The art direction for this project was guided by two main questions: What will gods look like in a post-tech / digital future? Is it possible to create a real life experience that resembles the type of future often depicted in science fiction, such as in the film Blade Runner?

This edition of Rave Rebels was a weekender, which gave us the chance to create an even bigger, more dazzling set-up for people to lose themselves in. The team took it upon themselves to exceed their own expectations. What can we do better, more mind blowing for the crowd? The result was based on a number of key decisions. On the one hand, we decided to synchronise all the separate technical operations systems—lights, video, motion—to create one interconnected whole. On the other hand, we decided to create a design with so many different aspects that every hour of the night evolved into another surprise.

We also opted to prioritise the ability to move around the space and created giant monolithic shaped LED screens to display holographic visuals. Finally, a major accomplishment for this edition was the organisation’s purchasing of two KUKA robots—with the long-term goal to incorporate them in future events. What else could create more a futuristic feel than two giant robots moving in time with synchronised lights and future-minded scenographic design?
