Float - Voodoo Village

Scenographic design / Show direction

2022, Voodoo Village, Belgium

Voodoo Village (2022 edition) is a festival and oasis of underground music around a castle in Belgium.

Voodoo Village asked me to create a scenographic design for the main stage at the festival, a large structure which resembles a greenhouse. The stage is mostly made of a transparent, glass-looking material, which means you are able to see the surroundings completely—including the movement of the sun, changes in daylight and the nearby trees. The client’s brief was short: Make it look iconic and not just like a regular greenhouse.

I started to play with the idea of creating massive, dense-looking objects hanging above the crowd. This resulted in a contemporary take on a rock—floating above the crowd, operated on motion cables. Subtle movement creates the illusion of large floating objects free of gravity. The light set-up elevated the design and created a 360 degree experience. The final surprise element was that we added projection mapping onto the main object—visuals that created an extra layer of depth.
